3 Americans killed in Afghanistan, making July deadliest month of war for U.S.

Three U.S. troops died in blasts in Afghanistan, bringing the death toll for July to at least 63 and surpassing the previous month’s record as the deadliest for American forces in the nearly 9-year-old war.

The three died in two separate blasts in southern Afghanistan the day before, a NATO statement said Friday. The statement gave no nationalities, but U.S. officials say all three were Americans. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity pending notification of kin.

U.S. and NATO commanders had warned that casualties would rise as the international military force ramps up the war against the Taliban, especially in their southern strongholds in Helmand and Kandahar provinces. President Obama ordered 30,000 reinforcements to Afghanistan last December in a bid to turn back a resurgent Taliban.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Matt Garza pitched the first no-hitter in Tampa Bay Rays history, and the fifth in the major leagues this season, in a 5-0 win over the Detroit Tigers on Monday.

Garza faced the minimum 27 batters, allowing only a second-inning walk, for a team that’s often been on the wrong end of pitching gems lately.

The Rays have been held hitless three times since last July, including a pair of perfect games that were thrown against them.

L.A. council unanimously confirms new Animal Services head

The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday unanimously confirmed Brenda Barnette as general manager of the Department of Animal Services, the city’s municipal shelter system that Councilman Greig Smith described as “under siege for a long time.”

Barnette follows in the troubled path of two previous general managers. Her predecessor resigned under fire a year ago and the manager before him was fired by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Well aware of the devoted but fractious community of rescuers, volunteers and shelter staffers that she must work with, Barnette told council members: “What I would ask the entire community is to agree on only three things — that we need to save more animals’ lives in the shelter, that we need to spay and neuter more animals in our community and that we need to work to end the cruelty because that will make this a safer community for both the animals and the people.”

Andre Ethier, Jonathan Broxton, Torii Hunter to play in All-Star Game

Andre Ethier and Jonathan Broxton are in the All-Star Game. So is Torii Hunter. But no one else from the host Angels was selected to the All-Star Game, and neither was Stephen Strasburg.

The Angels last had the minimum one player selected in 2006, the last year in which they did not win the American League West. The Angels start play Sunday 4 1/2 games behind the Texas Rangers.

In the days preceding Sunday’s announcement of the All-Star rosters, the buzz focused on Washington Nationals phenom Stephen Strasburg. The National League players voted for eight pitchers, with Strasburg not among them, and National League Manager Charlie Manuel did not include Strasburg among his five pitching selections.
